Spyro AI vs Semrush: Which One Actually Tracks AI Citations?

Semrush is a wide marketing platform: AI visibility lives in its AI Toolkit, sold as one of several toolkits you assemble. Spyro AI measures where you stand in Google and inside AI answers, audits the site, then writes and publishes the content, on one subscription. Here is where they differ.

Workflows

How the two workflows differ

Both measure and analyze well. They part company at the point where an insight has to become a shipped page, and at how many subscriptions that takes.

Spyro AI logo5 steps
  1. 1MeasureRanks and AI citations
  2. 2AuditSEO and GEO scores
  3. 3CreatePlanner and writer
  4. 4PublishWordPress, Shopify, Notion
  5. 5Re-measureAuto-tracked keyword

Prompts re-check weekly or daily, ranks and audits run weekly, and one keyword from every published article is tracked automatically, so this week's measurement decides next week's content. Every step draws on the same credit pool.

  2. 2AuditSite Audit
  3. 3TrackPosition Tracking
  4. 4Measure AIAI Visibility Toolkit
  5. 5Create and publishContent Toolkit

The whole chain exists, and the last link is a separate purchase: the Content Toolkit is $60 a month on top of a Semrush One plan, and it publishes to WordPress. That is a fair trade for the breadth Semrush buys you, and it is the reason two teams can quote very different Semrush prices for the same job.

Where Spyro AI wins

Where Spyro AI stands out

Four capability differences, stated as fit rather than as a verdict on Semrush.

01One subscription, not an assembly

Measurement, AI visibility, auditing, writing and publishing are all in the plan and all draw on one credit pool. Nothing on this page needs a second toolkit added to the bill, so the price you see is the price of the whole loop.

02You read what the assistant actually said

Spyro keeps the verbatim answer behind every check: the exact snippet showing your brand mentions in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Perplexity, the source URLs and titles the assistant linked, your position among the brands named, and the sentiment classified on each cited answer. That is the raw material behind the score, not only the score.

03Audits cost nothing to re-run

A crawl produces an SEO health score and a 16-point GEO readiness score in the same pass, and it charges no credits at all. Fix something, re-run it, and the only cost is the wait.

04A closed-loop GEO workflow

A gap in the audit becomes a planned article, the article is written with internal links and images, published to WordPress, Shopify or Notion, and one keyword from it is tracked automatically from then on, a closed loop rather than a set of tools you connect by hand.

Semrush lists its plans monthly and takes about 17 percent off for paying yearly, so a like-for-like figure depends on the term as well as the toolkits. Putting one starting price next to another and declaring a winner would be dishonest, because the two do not buy the same thing. The useful question is which of these capabilities you are currently paying for twice.

The call

Who should pick what

Neither product is the right answer for everyone, and the split falls along fairly clean lines.

Pick Spyro AI if

  • Your main question is whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity recommend you, and what to publish to change that.
  • You want measurement, writing and publishing on one subscription rather than a base plan plus two toolkits.
  • You run several sites or client accounts and want a flat price with unlimited seats.
  • Your sites are a few hundred pages rather than tens of thousands.

Pick Semrush if

  • You research at index scale and want the largest keyword database you can get, across 142 country databases.
  • You audit sites of tens or hundreds of thousands of pages rather than a few hundred.
  • You want rankings refreshed every day rather than every week.
  • You already run Semrush for site audits and rank tracking, and adding AI visibility to that subscription beats adding a second vendor.

Plenty of teams run both, and that is a reasonable outcome rather than a failure of the comparison. If you do, the thing worth checking is which capabilities you are paying for in both places.

FAQ's

Straight answers

The questions that come up most often when teams weigh these two, including the ones where the answer is not in our favour.

Is Spyro a replacement for Semrush?

For some teams, yes. For others it is honestly not. Spyro covers keyword research, rank tracking, technical and GEO auditing, AI visibility, content and publishing. It does not cover backlink research at index scale, historical data going back years, very large site crawls, or the advertising, social and local work that Semrush's other toolkits do. If any of those are central to your week, Semrush is doing a job Spyro does not attempt. If your priority is GEO and AI-answer tracking with SEO built into the same subscription, Spyro is the Semrush alternative built for that, and it replaces the need to run a separate SEO tool and a separate AI-visibility toolkit for teams whose needs fit inside its scope.

Which tool is better for small businesses and agencies?

Semrush's Starter and SEO plans include 1 seat, with extra seats $45 to $100/mo, and AI visibility, content generation and publishing sit in separate toolkits on top. Spyro's $99/mo Pro plan includes unlimited seats and every capability in one credit pool. For a small agency running several client sites, unlimited seats without a per-toolkit bill is the more direct fit. A business already deep in Semrush's ecosystem, running its keyword databases and daily rank tracking at scale, may still find that breadth worth the extra toolkits.

Which platform offers better value for a founder or small agency?

At $99/mo, Spyro includes AI visibility, a GEO audit, SEO, content generation and publishing, plus unlimited seats. Reaching equivalent Semrush coverage means the AI Visibility Toolkit ($99/mo standalone) plus the Content Toolkit ($60/mo) on top of a Starter or SEO plan from $139 to $199/mo, before extra seats. For a single founder or small agency running several sites on one flat subscription, Spyro's entry plan is the lower-cost path to that same coverage; Semrush's toolkit model can still be the better value if only one or two of those toolkits are actually needed.

Does Spyro have backlink data?

No. Spyro does not fetch or display a backlink profile. It covers keyword research, rank tracking, technical and GEO auditing, AI visibility, content and publishing. For index-scale backlink research, use a dedicated link tool such as Semrush or Ahrefs.

Which AI assistants does each product track?

Spyro checks five on every plan: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. Semrush's coverage is worth reading carefully, because its own pages describe it differently in different places: its AI visibility solution page says prompt tracking covers ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, its AI pricing page also names Perplexity, and its help centre describes Brand Performance reporting across Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Check the current pricing page against the report you actually plan to live in.

How much does AI visibility tracking cost on each?

On Spyro it is included on both plans and metered from the shared credit pool at 10 credits per prompt per assistant, or 20 for Claude. On Semrush it is included in the Semrush One plans, which start at $199 a month and allow 50 tracked prompts a day at Starter, 100 at Pro+ and 200 at Advanced. The AI Visibility Toolkit can also be bought on its own at $99 a month per domain, billed annually, with 25 tracked prompts.

How often does Spyro check AI assistants?

Weekly or daily, set individually for each prompt, with a location per prompt. A prompt is also checked immediately when you add it, and you can re-run one on demand. Semrush's prompt tracking updates daily.

Can Spyro actually publish the content it writes?

Yes. Publish targets are self-hosted WordPress, WordPress.com, Shopify and Notion. Articles publish immediately or on a scheduled date, with a table of contents, an author block, JSON-LD schema and Yoast or RankMath meta fields.

Do both products audit a site for AI search, or only for SEO?

Both do more than SEO, though the two scores are built from different signals. Spyro's crawl produces an SEO health score and a 16-point GEO readiness score in the same pass, and most of those 16 checks score writing craft: answer-first openings, quotable sentences, quoted sources, entity schema and whether the page is readable without JavaScript. Semrush's Site Audit carries an AI Search Health score and a named AI Search issue category (6 checks, leaning technical: llms.txt, content length and freshness, semantic HTML) plus a robots.txt check across eight AI user agents. Both are genuine AI-search audits, not a relabeled technical-SEO score, but they weigh different things to get there.

How many websites can I manage on Spyro?

Up to 10 on Pro and unlimited on Agency. Each website has its own audits, keywords, prompts, calendar and integrations, and they all draw on one shared credit pool, so there is no per-site fee.

How current are the figures on this page?

They were checked in August 2026 against the Semrush website and help centre, and against the Spyro codebase for our own numbers. Both products change often, and Semrush has restructured its plans more than once, so check the live pricing pages before you commit.
